It has been some time since I’ve written an update about my writing. This is for one simple reason: all I had time to dedicate towards were my university projects, and I didn’t want to write a blog post when the details of these projects were changing faster than I could keep track. In the end, I decided against liveblogging the entire process. Instead I will, at a later date, write up blog posts about my university experiences. Now that all of my academic creative writing assignments are over, and I’m in lockdown for at least three weeks, it is the perfect time for me to bring back out the writing and truly enjoy it. Without further ado, here is everything I’m writing right now.
Jimmy West Killed A Man
If you were following the blog this time last year, you might remember me talking about an idea I had, and the associated Pinterest board, for a man called Jimmy West. I was put off the project for two reasons, one academic and one rather more comic. The first was my supervisor guiding me in a different direction for my major project in creative writing – all of her reasoning was spot on, so I shelved the project but kept the writing I had for it just in case I decided to return. The second reason was that I started dating my boyfriend, JimBradyWrites, a few weeks after putting the project together. It felt weird to be writing about a serial killer who effectively had the same name as someone I’d not been dating for even a month – even though the name was entirely coincidental.
This project is about a serial killer recounting the events of his life, from his disturbed childhood to his late adulthood. It was initially hugely inspired by the style of Lolita and my first interest in crime fiction.
However, this week I looked back over what I had written and decided it was time to bring it back to life. The introduction still had a magnetic pull to it and it is one of the first times I have had such a clear voice in my head for the narrator this early on. I’m excited to see where it goes – be it short story, novella, or full blown novel. I’m suspending it will be in the short story to novella range.
I started writing this pretty much immediately after I submitted my dissertations. It is about an old woman watching her neighbours from her upstairs window. Similarly to Jimmy West Killed A Man, it is crime fiction. Crime and thriller have quickly become my firm favourites when it comes to writing, be it short story or novel. I am also leaning toward domestic thrillers specifically. Gone Girl is one of my favourite books of all time and I would love to create something with the same tropes and themes.
Short Story Anthology
I have a lot of ideas based around at least one short story anthology. It would probably be self-published but I’m still moving around the concepts.
